Dry dock near Flatford Mill
Dry dock near Flatford Mill
This photograph shows the end of the dry dock that features in John Constable’s painting of 1814 called ‘Boat-building near Flatford Mill.’ The brick floor, though 19th century, is a later addition. The photograph shows a reconstruction of the dock ‘gate’. Also shown is the drainage channel that allows the dock to be emptied of water. Each winter the dock is ‘flooded’ to protect the brick floor from frost.
