Commemoration of the last Invasion of Britain, Fishguard
Commemoration of the last Invasion of Britain, Fishguard
This stone, in the centre of Fishguard, commemorates the last invasion of Britain in 1797, when a motley band of 1400 French invaders under Lieutenant Colonel Tate - an Irish American - invaded at Fishguard in the erroneous belief that British country folk would sympathise with the cause of the French revolution. In fact the invasion was a bungled affair and easily defeated. The full story is told here: LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link )
