Georgian cannon, Steep Holm
Georgian cannon, Steep Holm
This part of the 1860s Summit Battery. Steep Holm was fortified with ten 7 inch rifled muzzle loading cannons that were carried on carriages rotating on a track (racer) in the stone fronted barbette and centred by a Georgian cannon buried 8 foot into the concrete. Nine of the Victorian guns survive and nine the Georgian cannons survive, although two were displaced by the WWII Steep Holm coastal defence batteries. One of the latter is now outside the barracks and one was lost. Summit Battery was one of four double gun batteries but it and Garden Battery were half destroyed by the WWII batteries.
