Nowton St Peter’s church
Nowton St Peter’s church
This is another of our churches which is part of our Norman heritage. Unfortunately, it has, like many others, been ‘got at’ by our Victorian ancestors. The strange little dormers in the roof are their doing. The north and south doorways and possibly a slit window in the north wall are Norman. Inside the church, all is pristine and clinical. There are two nice canopied niches either side of the altar. The piscina and dropped-sill sedilia match well with the reredos with its cusped arches. The font is a hideous triple-colour marble ‘off the peg’ job. A monument on the wall to Elizabeth Oakes (1811) has the amended inscription ‘ the works of Faith Pope and Charity’. By whose hand, I wonder? The glass is all Flemish picture glass acquired by the husband of the above from monasteries.
