TM2148 : Playford St Mary’s church

Playford St Mary’s church
Standing proudly above the parish it serves, the 14th c. tower also acts as a south porch. Over the decorated door arch there is a canopied niche, complete with St. Mary. Left of the south door is a granite obelisk. The name it bears is Thomas Clarkson, (friend of the slave) who is buried to the right, close to the chancel door. Inside, a wall memorial gives a fuller story. Although Wisbech proudly claim him as theirs, this is where his bones lie. Another name of note is Sir George Airy, Astronomer Royal who died 1892. Playford is very proud of them both and rightly so. The bench end carvings are different from the usual but have no great age. You may hear Playford’s other claim to fame but I doubt that you will see them; they are 2 bells that have hung in the belfry since Tudor times. There is a nice wall brass in the chancel to Sir George Felbrigg (1400).
