Autumn slime mould species in grassland (3)
Autumn slime mould species in grassland (3)
A slime mould species, Mucilago crustacea, which looks as if it is made up of a large number of very small cells (like fish-eggs in size and shape). This is the last stage in the reproduction cycle, when the inside of the colony turns black (I scuffed the white outer layer with my shoe). Growing in open grassland, with many specimens scattered around.

Identification thanks to Geograph member Lairich Rig. See also his NS3678 : A slime mould - Mucilago crustacea (mature specimens) and links to previous stages.
