Hornbeam Stool in Pound Wood
This is a middle-aged Hornbeam stool. This tree was probably coppiced around 20-50 years ago, certainly before the current management programme began in 1993. The tree was felled to about 30cm above ground level. The next season it produced shoots from this base which, over the next few decades have produced the circular array of trunks around the (now-hollow) central trunk.
