Longmarsh Leat entering the River Dart
Longmarsh Leat entering the River Dart
Longmarsh, is the name of the flood plain to the right in the photo, this area floods with salty water from time to time on the high tides. The freshwater from the leat is held back and used to flood over Longmarsh to reduce the salinity of the water over the marsh area.

Longmarsh is thought to have been a managed saltmarsh pasture and being periodically flooded it would have provided an area for lush spring and summer grazing for livestock

The view shows the point at which the water from the leat enters the tidal River Dart. Also shown is the tourist boat 'Cardiff Castle' heading north and upstream taking advantage of the high tide to take passengers from Dartmouth right to the quay in Totnes the highest navigable point on the river.
