ST9769 : Large lawn at Bowood

taken 14 years ago, near to Studley, Wiltshire, England

Large lawn at Bowood
Large lawn at Bowood
Looking south with The Little House on the right and Clarke's Hill on the Bowood estate in the distance. At the far end of this lawn once stood The Big House, the main house built by the 1st Earl of Shelbourne. The house was left empty after the Second World War and fell into disrepair. By 1955 it had become so dilapidated that the 8th Marquess decided to demolish it and convert The Little House into a more comfortable home.

See LinkExternal link and LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) for the reverse view with the Big House still standing (note also the large dining room connecting the two, which was also demolished).
