Dungeness is the terminus of the Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway, a 15-inch gauge railway along the coastline of Romney Marsh. The terminus is built as a loop, with trains running clockwise to turn round. On the horizon, the coastline curves round to Folkestone and Dover.
This photo was taken from the top of the old Dungeness lighthouse.
TR0816 : Dungeness railway station This photo, like others taken from the lighthouse, shows that the shingle has built up in ridges, presumably due to storms. This is even more noticeable on satellite images of the area. The effect is rather like the rings of a tree trunk.
