Perth railway bridge
The first railway to reach Perth was the line from Dundee in 1847, but this terminated at Barnhill on the opposite bank of the river, leaving passengers to transfer by ferry to the city centre. After the London-Aberdeen rail line opened to the west of the city centre a wooden railway bridge was built over the river, but the Dundee line still did not extend as far as the new general station which by then linked to the national network of railways. In 1862 the general station was extended to include the station for Dundee and work began on the current railway bridge which was completed in 1863. Originally there was a swinging arch on this section west of Moncreiffe Island to allow for navigation on the Tay, but the arch was closed permanently around 1890.
There is a pedestrian walkway alongside the bridge which provides access to the King James VI golf course on the island and continues across to Barnhill.
