Upper step in saltmarsh, Littleton Warth
Upper step in saltmarsh, Littleton Warth
On the right, the highest level of the saltmarsh is a fine turf (tentatively identified as salt meadow) on firm ground, perhaps grazed by rabbits. The middle level on the left was softer and full of hoofmarks. The eroded edge is less indented than the lower step because it has a shorter period of exposure to the tide ST5890 : Lower step in saltmarsh, Littleton Warth. OED gives 'warth' as a dialect word meaning, unsurprisingly, a shore or strand; in modern use, a flat meadow, especially one close to a stream; a stretch of coast.
