Lower step in saltmarsh, Littleton Warth
The middle level on the right was soft and full of hoofmarks. Bordering mudflats, the lower level is dominated by a species of Spartina: cord grass. The eroded edge is more indented than the upper step (right) because it has a longer period of exposure to the tide ST5890 : Upper step in saltmarsh, Littleton Warth. OED gives 'warth' as a dialect word meaning, unsurprisingly, a shore or strand; in modern use, a flat meadow, especially one close to a stream; a stretch of coast. Just visible through the haze is Oldbury power station.
