Part of a Royal Scots recruiting poster, Edinburgh Castle
The National War Museum has a fine collection of army recruiting posters, such as this one urging enlistment in the Royal Scots Regiment. Many of these posters promote the idea of a strong Scottish martial tradition. The Scots have always been overproportionately represented in the British Army; in the Great War, for example, more Scots died as a percentage of their population than any of the other home nations. An excellent video shown in the museum makes the point that Scotland's military tradition has been a key part of its national identity for centuries, giving the Scots a sense of national pride and worth within the Union. Consequently, the scaling-down of the military establishment since the end of the Cold War has particularly affected Scottish regiments and many have found the adjustment painful.
