R2764 : Dangan Castle

taken 14 years ago, near to Ballynacally, Co Clare, Ireland

Dangan Castle
Dangan Castle
One of the Norman castles built to protect the Shannon estuary. The name comes from "daingean" meaning "firm" and refers to the castle being built on solid rock, with the only access from the east. The castle, and the whole of this area, was within the ownership of the McMahon family. The ruin is now on private land, and this photo was taken by permission of the landowner.
This view is from the south across a cattle slurry pit. Do not try to walk across here, as I found out to the cost of my shoes!
