Newburgh: a portrait of Hitler
Tank traps and other beach defences were built in 1940 in anticipation of an invasion by Germany. Most traps are plain concrete cubes but some have war time graffiti. This decorated block lies near to the mouth of the river Ythan at Newburgh, Aberdeenshire. The photograph was taken in December 2010 when strong winds and high tides had exposed the block from the sands. The block shows a caricature of Adolf Hitler. The block lies just along from one showing a rather better rendition of both Hitler and Winston Churchill NK0022 : Tank trap with graffiti. Perhaps this was a "sketch" for the more complex work.
