Deer today, venison tomorrow
Deer today, venison tomorrow
Walking through Chatsworth, I came across these few deer foraging near a bonfire, and being hungry (for walking through snow uses up the calories) I got to thinking on venison casserole (not deer casserole, you understand).

Think about how the English language has evolved; 1000 years ago this land was conquered by French-speaking Normans; they became the lords and masters; they could eat the meat, they could afford it. They spoke French; it was venison, a word which derived from the Latin word for "hunt"; but to the peasants it was still deer. Similarly, we peasants called a cow a cow, but those who ate the cow called the meat "beef" (from French, again, the word bœuf), and sheep, on the hoof, when we serfs were looking after them alive, became mutton once they were slaughtered (French: mouton).

So I had chicken at the pub for lunch (not poulet!)
