The churchyard contains a number of rather spectacular table tombs a few of which can be seen here. The tomb at the far left with the Doric columns is that of the late Thomas Washbourne and is listed Grade II LinkExternal link The church itself is Grade I.

The church is listed Grade I and parts of it date to Norman times. However only traces of the original 12th century church remain. Much of what can be seen today is 14th and, in the case of the tower, 15th century. The 19th century saw much activity when it was restored by T H Wyatt in 1846. Further work was carried out in the 1850s, 1880s and in 1905. There is more technical information here LinkExternal link and, for a more informal but no less informative approach, there is this pdf LinkExternal link

The church is built in what was called Ellendune, thought to be an ancient hill fort. In 825 a battle took place here which saw the Kings of Wessex achieve dominance over their Mercian counterparts.
