St Peter's Church, Wearmouth
St Peter's Church together with its twin church, St Paul's in Jarrow, was once the heart of one of the first Christian monasteries in Britain. In the C7th it was a major centre of European learning, with international influence. The church was founded by nobleman, Benedict Biscop in 674AD; its twin in Jarrow seven years later. Bede called it 'one monastery in two places'.

Bede's World is a museum in Jarrow dedicated to the life and times of the Venerable Bede (673-735AD) Link
He was a monk, author and scholar who lived at the Abbey Church of St Peter and St Paul, Wearmouth-Jarrow, a double monastery at Jarrow and Monkwearmouth (today part of Sunderland).
Ancient churches still exist on both sites NZ3365 : Tower, St Paul's Church, Jarrow and NZ4057 : St Peter's Church, Wearmouth but remains of the monastery only at Jarrow NZ3365 : Monastery site & St Paul's Church, Jarrow
