Parish Church of Rudby
There is a story that in the 19c a married woman apparently died in the village and her body was removed to the church for burial. Her wedding ring was allowed to remain on her finger. The parish clerk, in the middle of the night, dug up the coffin, unscrewed the lid and tried to remove the ring from the body by cutting off the finger. Suddenly the woman sat upright and uttered a loud scream. The poor woman had been prematurely buried in a trance like state. The woman's husband was so overjoyed on getting his wife back from the dead that he gave the parish clerk a web of the finest linen. Who said crime doesn't pay!
