Panxworth ruined church of All Saints
Panxworth ruined church of All Saints
The ruin of Panxworth church is surrounded by a fence to protect the visitor from falling masonry. In 2006 the tower was struck by lightning and a hole blasted in the eastern face of the parapet. The church had been ruinous for many years and was eventually rebuilt in 1847 by the Victorians, who seem to have had money to burn. It was used for a century or so, but was eventually made redundant in the 1970s through lack of use, and became a place of worship for Satanists. Hearing of this (it made national news) the C of E decided that the building should be demolished. Thankfully the 14th century tower remains as a picturesque landmark which incidentally can be clearly seen from the tower of nearby Ranworth. The graveyard has been left untouched and fresh flowers still appear on some of the graves.
