NS9585 : Longannet Power Station from the eastIt has been suggested by Oxford University that up to 300million fish and up to 100 million fish eggs and larvae are sucked into power station cooling water intake screens and perhaps up to 20 million fish die every year just at this one plant alone. Nuclear power stations require from 30 to 240 tonnes of cooling water each second.
Scottish Power, who own Longannet, is said to be exploring various technologies to reduce the fish kill.
