Larkhill and Stonehenge were the birth place of military aviation and crowds came to watch the spectacle of these wood, string and canvas planes taking to the skies. Accidents were common and often brought pioneering lives to a premature end. The inscription on the memorial reads: 'To the memory of Captain Loraine and Staff-Sergeant Wilson who whilst flying on duty, met with a fatal accident near this spot on July 5th 1912 Erected by their comrades'. Just over 1km to the east is another memorial SU1142 : 2nd Memorial near Airman's Corner, A360, near Larkhill and Stonehenge, Wiltshire to another accident.
