Passengers disembarking from Paddle Steamer Waverley at Ilfracombe
These present day passengers are re-enacting a common Victorian scene when paddle steamers would take the mass population from the South Wales pit towns and the fast growing cities like Newport and Cardiff to the fresh air and new holiday resorts along the coast of Somerset, Devon and Cornwall. The original PS Waverley of course did similar excursions in her "home town" of the Clyde rather than the Bristol Channel that her successor now visits each year. For old postcards of paddle steamers at Ilfracombe see Link
Built in 1947, to replace the original Waverly lost at Dunkirk in 1940, she is the last working ocean going paddle steamer. Link
