Flood marker stones, Isleworth riverside
These marker stones are set into the churchyard wall, just where it starts to turn away from the riverside. The wording on each is the same: 'THE WATER FLOWED TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS STONE . . .', followed by the date. The dates given (reckoning from left to right) are in the years 1965, 1774, 192? (last digit defaced), 1875 and 1882. All flood dates recorded by the stones fall between October and March.
The uniformity of wording and style of lettering must mean that some (at least) of these stones are recent replacements of older, worn ones.
