February fill-dyke: flooded meadows at Ancaster
This little corner of south-west Lincolnshire is low-lying, and always damp - but by the end of February 2009 it was under water. The meadows here are managed as a nature reserve by the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, under the name of Willoughby Moor Closes. In early spring there are swathes of celandine, followed later in the season by orchids in abundance.

The trees seen here, growing along the Beck, are alders. The reserve also has some particularly fine old pollard willows.

Willoughby Moor lies in what is known as the Ancaster Gap. The story is that the forerunner of the present-day Trent once flowed east through here to the North Sea, rather than flowing north, to join the Humber.
