The Ninety-Five Islands, Silwood Lake
The Ninety-Five Islands, Silwood Lake
Looking from the earthen dam towards the inflow of the Red Stream. The two Sallow-dominated islands (Salix cinerea subsp. atrocinerea) flanking the inflow to the lake were created during the exceptionally dry summer of 1995, when bare mud was exposed for long enough that the Sallow seedlings grew large enough to survive inundation in the following winter. You can see a strip of bare mud in front of the inflow in this picture from May 2006; the mud, like the lake water, is coloured red by iron-carrying bacteria.
