This massive airbase was home to US cruise missiles that were launched from huge military aircraft that required a 4km runway for takeoff. The runway was mostly taken up when the military left, and the Common was returned to the people of Berkshire has a magnificent nature reserve. This small section was left as a reminder of its former land use.
