Christ the King Secondary School
Knowsley Council chiefs plan to close the £24m flagship secondary school Christ the King, less than two years after opening, due to dwindling pupil numbers. Opened in January 2009 by then Education Secretary Ed Balls, it was the first of seven new secondaries to open in a £157m revamp to replace eleven ageing Knowsley high schools under the government Building Schools For the Future scheme. It replaced the St Edmund of Canterbury Secondary School and was billed as a centre which could be used by the whole community for learning, sport, cultural and leisure activities. Met by fierce opposition from parents and local people, closure proposals are now under discussion.
