The excavated remains of the barrack blocks have been exposed here to give visitors an appreciation of the size of the Roman fort at Segontium, which would have housed around 1,000 Roman auxiliary troops, apparently originally recruited in Germany and sent to fight the Roman Empire's battles in Iron Age Wales.
