The Globe Theatre recreated
This reproduction of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre was opened in 1997, 384 years after the original burnt down. A second Globe Theatre stood from 1614 to 1642, but this is a recreation of the original one. The leading light in bringing this project to life was Sam Wanamaker, father of the actress Zoë, who sadly died in 1993 before its completion - but at least he knew it was well underway. He has a memorial in TQ3280 : Southwark Cathedral next to that to Shakespeare himself.
The building is just 750ft (230m) from the site of the original Globe, whose position is now further from the banks of the Thames than it was in Elizabethan times, so the new position reflects its original riverside location. As a building it is remarkable as being the only one built in London with a thatched roof since the Great Fire of London. Special permission had to be granted to circumvent the bye-laws introduced after that conflagration to prevent a repetition of the catastrophe of 1666.
