Edinburgh Mercat Cross Monument, Drum Estate
Edinburgh Mercat Cross Monument, Drum Estate
A structure in the form of a mercat cross on the spot where Edinburgh's cross was re-assembled after its removal from the High Street in 1756. It is not clear why it was brought here, but it has been suggested that it might have been to deny Jacobites a shrine, because it was at the cross that 'James VIII' had been proclaimed King. The cross was eventually returned to its original location in 1866 and placed on a new octagonal platform in 1885. The monument stands against the south-facing walled garden of the estate.
