The Cat and Fiddle Inn is well known as the second-highest pub in England, though I heard somewhere that the landlord has recently had the height resurveyed and is now claiming first place, higher than the Tan Hill Inn in North Yorkshire (NY896066). Even if not, it's a close second - the generally accepted difference is only some 40 feet. The most popular theory is that that the pub name comes from the French "le chat fidele", the faithful cat. It's a popular stop for bikers exercising their skills on the A537 Macclesfield-Buxton road, which has been described as the most dangerous in England. A noticeboard by the pub entrance contains a map showing the locations of 25 serious and 3 fatal motorcycle accidents along the Cat and Fiddle Road in the last 4 years.
