TF0820 : Hydrant and Hydrant sign

taken 7 years ago, near to Bourne, Lincolnshire, Great Britain

Hydrant and Hydrant sign
Hydrant and Hydrant sign
In a corner of Westfield park the familiar H hydrant sign. The '4' in the upper arm of the sign denotes a 4 inch main, and dates the sign to the early 1960s before metrication. The lower number '3' denotes how far the hydrant is away, in feet. I bet they didn't have anything lower than a '3' when they put it in.

The actual hydrant is a stop-valve and cover below the yellow manhole. In use a stand-pipe would be screwed to it to give control at around waist height.
