Vermond Cross Socket Stone
Vermond Cross Socket Stone
The circular stone in the picture is said to be the base of the old Vermond Cross, also known as The Coffin Stone.
The stone lies at the top of a steep path where the bearers would lay the coffin to rest on their way to Penalt Old church.
Vermond is thought to be a corruption of "Vermin" as a tree known as The Vermin Oak stood nearby, the last local wild boar is said to have been killed at this spot, (I must admit the stone looks like an Old Mill Stone).
