Charlestown
The port of Charlestown was built between 1790 and 1810 to export copper and china clay, and to import coal, by a local landowner and entrepreneur, Charles Rashleigh. It has survived remarkably unscathed into the modern era and is now a popular location for movie makers - almost any historic depiction of Cornwall in a film or television series is likely to have scenes shot here. The square riggers add to the atmosphere and, despite the modern cars and road crane on the quayside, the visitor has a distinct sense of stepping back into history.
