Somerset's Mound, Inveresk parish kirkyard
An earthworks thrown up by the English forces during the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh. Link
An information board at the entrance to the church explains that,
"The strategic position of this spot which attracted the Votadini* tribe and the Romans also attracted the Duke of Somerset who formed a mound for his cannon in 1547. The former church was witness to the defeat of the 30,000 Scots army at the hands of the English when 10,000 Scots died. In 1650 Cromwell was similarly drawn to this site when he stabled his horses in the church. He placed cannon on Somerset's mound and built another behind the church which later disappeared to make room for burial plots."
The Ordnance Survey map shows Oliver's Mound as a position further down the slope above Musselburgh Grammar School.
*Roman name for the Gododdin (pronounced 'go-dawthin' with a hard 'th')
