Hugh MacDiarmid Memorial
Born Christopher Murray Grieve in Langholm on 11 August 1892, Hugh MacDiarmid is widely acknowledged to be Scotland's greatest twentieth century poet, and this sculpture erected in his memory incorporates images from his writings. A politically-active figure as well, MacDiarmid helped found the National Party of Scotland in 1928, and later joined the Communist party in 1934. He was expelled from the Communist party in 1939 but rejoined in 1957, standing as a candidate in the 1964 General Election in the Kinross and West Perthshire seat - this was the constituency of the Prime Minister, Alec Douglas-Home. Hugh MacDiarmid died in Edinburgh on 9 September 1979.
