Samuel Smiles plaque, High Street
The home of Samuel Smiles whose hugely popular book took its place on the bookshelves of Victorian homes alongside the Bible, Foxe's Book of Martyrs and Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress. 'Self Help', published in 1859, spread the Victorian gospel that material success was the reward for self-improvement ('standing on one's own two feet'). It was amply illustrated by the life stories of the great men of the era who, if Smiles is to be believed, had achieved fame and wealth in society purely by dint of hard work and their unflinching determination to succeed.
