As mentioned in NS4480 : Valley of a tributary of Finland Burn, the Finland Burn appears to be the "Burn of Mewy" of the Pont/Blaeu map, where it is shown to have its source near "Standingstoppe", now known as the Hill of Standing Stones ( LinkExternal link ). The burn is shown, but not named, on Roy's Military Survey of Scotland (1740s-50s).

The OS Object Name Books give "Merkins Burn" as an alternative name for the Finland Burn. On the early-nineteenth-century "Plan of Dumbarton Muir", it is called Fingland Burn. It was also known as the North Inchmenoch Burn (1826), a name that becomes more intelligible in its slightly earlier spelling, the Ishmeanoch Burn (1801): I take Ishmeanoch to mean the "middle stream", from Gaelic "eas" and "meadhanach". It would be natural to assume that the name "South Inchmenoch Burn" was applied to the watercourse that flows through NS44278090, but it may have referred instead to what is now the NS4581 : Docking Hole see the old Levenside estate plans that are collectively numbered RHP20101 at National Records of Scotland.

See LinkExternal link where this and other local place-names are discussed.

This photograph shows the burn flowing through an area that is, on OS maps from the first-edition onwards, called Red Brae (see also NS4481 : The Finland Burn). Part of the Campsie Hills can be seen straight ahead, in the distant background.
