The Finland Burn at Red Brae
As mentioned in NS4480 : Valley of a tributary of Finland Burn, the Finland Burn appears to be the "Burn of Mewy" of the Pont/Blaeu map, where it is shown to have its source near "Standingstoppe", now known as the Hill of Standing Stones ( Link
). The burn is shown, but not named, on Roy's Military Survey of Scotland (1740s-50s).
[The OS Object Name Books give "Merkins Burn" as an alternative name for the Finland Burn. On the early-nineteenth-century "Plan of Dumbarton Muir", it is called Fingland Burn.]
This photograph shows the burn flowing through an area that is, on OS maps from the first-edition onwards, called Red Brae (see also NS4481 : The Finland Burn). Part of the Campsie Hills can be seen straight ahead, in the distant background.
