Former limestone quarry
Former limestone quarry
This is a more distant view of the site that is shown in NS4380 : Pool (in a former limestone quarry). A few outcrops of cornstone (a kind of limestone) remain on the upper part of the slopes on the right. A pool, its extent depending on recent weather, fills part of the large hollow that has been left here by extensive quarrying. Parts of a natural wall of crumbly shale have been left behind; these can be seen on the near side of the pool and the adjacent green area.

The stone that was quarried here was burned in kilns, whose remains are still visible just to the north of the pool: NS4380 : Ruined lime-kiln. In this district, the cornstone burning activity was at its peak during the eighteenth century, and the site had long been disused by the time of the first-edition OS map (c.1860).

Quarrying was not confined to the large hollow that is shown in the present photograph; its traces are also evident in an area that lies about 100 metres to the south-west of the pool: NS4380 : Traces of limestone quarrying. Smaller-scale quarrying look place nearby: NS4380 : Remains of a lime-kiln.

The Lang Dyke – Link – can be seen on the skyline, near the right-hand edge of the photo. The Campsie Hills are located almost centrally on the skyline, with the more distant Fintry Hills just to their left and obscured by haze. The distant area of forestry near the left-hand edge of the photograph is at the eastern side of NS4581.
Network of old limestone industry tracks :: NS4379

A very extensive network of ancient tracks on the moors in West Dunbartonshire links old quarries, ruined lime-kilns, and other sites connected with the local limestone-burning industry, which flourished in the 18th century. See Link for a Geograph article about the network, and LinkExternal link for an annotated satellite view of it.
