Traces of limestone quarrying
The green, disturbed area shown here is located alongside the upper reaches of the Finland Burn; the course of the burn can be seen in the foreground. A few small outcrops of limestone are still visible in the pit.
Much more extensive quarrying took place, probably in the eighteenth century, about 140 metres to the south (NS4380 : Traces of limestone quarrying), and 100 metres to the south-east (NS4380 : Former limestone quarry). The stone was burned in lime-kilns that were located about 80 metres to the ESE: NS4380 : Remains of lime-kilns.

Network of old limestone industry tracks :: NS4379
A very extensive network of ancient tracks on the moors in West Dunbartonshire links old quarries, ruined lime-kilns, and other sites connected with the local limestone-burning industry, which flourished in the 18th century. See Linkfor a Geograph article about the network, and Link
for an annotated satellite view of it.
