Remains of an enclosure
Remains of an enclosure
Visible in this photograph is the outline of a more or less rectangular enclosure; its long axis is oriented SSW-NNE, and it measures about 25 metres by about 15 metres (it is slightly wider at its northern end).

[This enclosure is not depicted on OS maps of any era, and it had not previously been recorded. I have submitted a report to WoSAS. Like the nearby NS4481 : Cultivation traces at Red Brae, it suggests that there was once a farmstead here; on that topic, see the last-cited link.]

The photograph was taken from near the NE corner. The entrance appears to have been at the northern end of the western side (at the far right, in this picture). The centre of the enclosure is located about 50 metres to the north of the NS4481 : The Finland Burn at Red Brae.

The enclosure is outlined by shallow ditches to the north, east, and west; see, for example, the line of taller grass that runs up the left-hand edge of the image (the eastern side of the site).

For a view from the other end, see NS4481 : Remains of an enclosure.

The enclosure is beside a track which was part of an extensive network connected with the local limestone-burning industry; see the second of the end-notes for details.
Remains of an enclosure

The hitherto unreported traces of an old rectangular enclosure, located just to the north of the Finland Burn where it flows through Red Brae. Like nearby cultivation traces – Link – the enclosure was probably connected with a farmstead that is now long gone.

Network of old limestone industry tracks :: NS4379

A very extensive network of ancient tracks on the moors in West Dunbartonshire links old quarries, ruined lime-kilns, and other sites connected with the local limestone-burning industry, which flourished in the 18th century. See Link for a Geograph article about the network, and LinkExternal link for an annotated satellite view of it.
