Martyrs' Monument, Greyfriars Kirkyard
The Monument commemorates the Covenanters executed after the Restoration of 1660. The National Covenant of 1638, signed first in the kirkyard and then throughout Scotland, was a protest against Charles I's support of episcopacy and attempt to impose an Anglican form of liturgy on the Scottish Kirk, based on a presumed right to dictate forms of church organisation and worship by analogy with his position as Head of the Church of England.
