Broad-gauge "Bridge Rail"
Broad-gauge "Bridge Rail"
This picture was taken after crossing the pedestrian level crossing, looking westwards along the "down" track of the Bristol main line. In the foreground is a piece of broad-gauge rail. This is a common sight in the West Country where rail like this was used up to 1892, when the broad gauge was finally abolished. Look for bridge rails employed as signposts or as fence posts along all former broad gauge tracks!
