The wood ahead masks the remains of Southfield colliery Pit No. 3 and a railway spur leading to Southfield Pit No. 1 and the massive coke ovens adjacent to it.

This line was part of an expansion by the Monkland Railway Company who built it about 1850. It later became known as the North Monkland Branch of the North British Railway (NBR) when amalgamation took place in 1865.
It was almost exclusively a mineral line which served the dozens of collieries in the district. This line came up the incline from Kipps engine sheds at Coatbrdige and terminated when it joined the NBR Slammaman Line at North Monkland Junction north-east of Lodge Farm not far from this point.
