Ancient trackway
A braided track, in the foreground, converges to form a single track not far ahead. This example, crossing a hill called Knockshanoch, is not as deep, nor as easily visible, as the one shown in NS4379 : Ancient trackway, but it is part of the same extended network of tracks.

Though now rather indistinct, this track was once part of a road to Drymen, and it is labelled as such on an old "Plan of Dumbarton Muir"; that Plan pre-dates all OS maps of the area, and indeed was one of the authorities for the names that appeared on the earliest OS maps of the moor. See the References section of the article linked from the end-note for further details.

From the point shown in the present photograph, the tracks continue roughly NNE, crossing the Murroch Burn at about NS43727989, and then branching off to several sites, including those shown in NS4380 : Traces of limestone quarrying and NS4380 : Former limestone quarry, but extending as far as the NS4481 : Remains of an enclosure, and beyond.
Network of old limestone industry tracks

A very extensive network of ancient tracks on the moors in West Dunbartonshire links old quarries, ruined lime-kilns, and other sites connected with the local limestone-burning industry, which flourished in the 18th century. See Link for a Geograph article about the network, and LinkExternal link for an annotated satellite view of it.
