Hounslow West Underground Station
Hounslow West Underground Station
The Metropolitan District Railway first opened a terminus station here in 1884, named Hounslow Barracks after the nearby cavalry barracks. The building in the photograph, with its distinctive heptagonal, or 7-sided, ticket hall was built as a replacement for the 1884 station in 1931. It was designed by the London Underground architects Stanley Heaps and Charles Holden and is now a Grade II Listed Building.

Up until 1975 the ticket hall led immediately to the station platforms, but in that year it was decided to extend the Piccadilly Line to Heathrow, the Piccadilly having taken over responsibility for railway operations at the station from the District Line in 1964. In order to avoid wholesale demolition of a lot of residential properties on the extension of the existing alignment of the tracks, they were re-routed from the London end of the platforms in a south-westerly direction to enter a new cut and cover tunnel alongside the Bath Road. The platforms were moved to the new alignment and a new surface building was constructed above them that was connected to the ticket hall in the photograph by a covered pedestrian walkway.

The road in the foreground is the A3006 Bath Road, with a box junction designed to prevent a gridlock of traffic.
