This shows the arrangement pertaining to one of three pairs of stones. The great spur wheel is meshed with the stone nut (the gear in the top centre foreground) and this is driving the runner stone above. The big wheel at the bottom operates the jacking ring that lifts the stone nut out of engagement. The little bevel gears on the right raise and lower the tentering beam that adjusts the gap between the stones and the coarseness of the flour. This is an unusually fine example that is largely in iron. The pit wheel is seen at the bottom. This watermill was open for National Mills Weekend.
Mills Open Weekend 2011

National Mills Weekend is an annual celebration of the UK's milling heritage. The event is organised by the Mills Section of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings.
The 2011 dates were the 14th and 15th May. Over 450 buildings were open to visitors meaning many to choose from. They ranged from fully working wind and water mills to under restoration or rarely open buildings.
