Trebuchet at Urquhart Castle
The information board by the trebuchet states:
“Edward I bought siege engines to Scotland and even had them made here.
Urquhart Castle itself suffered a siege in September 1303 when it fell into the hands of Edward I's army.
This modern replica is based on the work of Villard de Honnecourt, a 13th century French architect. It has a counterweight of 6 tonnes and a throwing arm of 12.5 metres. Test firings have shown that it can hurl a stone ball weighing about 11 kilogrammes a distance of 140 metres with accuracy.
The largest trebuchets with counterweights of up to 20 tonnes (20,000 kilogrammes) could fire up to 400 metres.
By the late 15th century guns had effectively taken the place of the trebuchet and the other, smaller siege engines.”

Urquhart Castle :: NH5328
Situated in a stunning location on the north side of Loch Ness, this castle had a turbulent history for around 500 years from the 1200s.
It changed hands many times, between the English and Scots around the early 14th century, the Scottish Crown and the MacDonald Lords of the Isles in the 15th and 16th centuries, and finally in the late 17th century when a garrison loyal to the protestant monarchy of William & Mary held off a larger Jacobite force. When the last soldiers left in 1692 they blew up parts of the castle to prevent any further use.
The castle is now owned by The National Trust for Scotland and is under the care of Historic Scotland.
A visitor centre, from which there is a stunning view of the castle, was constructed in 2002 and houses a shop, café and audio visual theatre.
